Although white water rafting is deemed an extreme sport, it doesn’t have to be so extreme if that’s not what you’re looking for. Lots of people also participate in white water rafting as a rather adventurous way of sightseeing!

White water rafting down the Grand Canyon for instance can provide views of the cliffs that can only be seen from the river you are rafting down.

However, even if you’re just taking on a very easy and pleasant part of a river, the truth remains that, if you are not properly prepared white water rafting can be dangerous, so there are definitely things you should know first.

So what you must do is to do a little reading on the subject and a little research into the different rafting clubs that can be found where you intend to participate in white water rafting.

If you’re thinking of going on a trip any time soon, you should talk to your travel agent to find out more about the white water rafting training that exists where you’re be going. And don’t forget to make sure that the instructors who will be instructing you have the proper certifications.

A number of things will be explained to you in order for you to participate in white water rafting for the first time. The first thing you’ll be taught will be how to use the safety equipment, your life jacket etc.

You will be shown how to maneuver the raft in teams, since most rafts generally hold from five to seven or more people, and everyone must work as a team to navigate the rapids.

Once your team have been shown where to sit inside the raft, you will be instructed how to shift your weight when going over the rapids. You will also of cause be told what not to do while you are in the raft.

In terms of things not to do, one is to never lean into the middle of the raft at any time, since doing so could cause a clash of heads. Your guide will dedicate some time to explaining how to use your life jacket and other safety gear and of course what to do if you fall out of the raft.

Being able to swim properly is, as I’m sure you realize, absolutely essential in white water rafting. If your swimming is a little messy you may need to take a few lessons to get yourself up to speed.
