Tourist Attractions In Historical Beechworth, Victoria

Beechworth is located in rural Victoria, Australia and boasts gold rush era origins that make it a facinating historical town. In recent years Beechworth has become famous for its gourmet delights and local produce that have gourmands visiting the town year round.

Very close to the town there are many different wineries that produce very good wines and ports. Tours of the vineyards are organized from in town and are a wonderful way to get to know the surrounding countryside. In addition to the surrounding wineries, back in town there is a micro brewery that has won loads of awards for its ales. At the tasting bar you can sample the full range and make an educated choice about which one you would like to accompany your lunch or dinner at the brewery.

One of the top local stops for a bite to eat is the Beechworth bakery, which is famous all around Australia. There has been a bakery on site since 1857, but today it is run by inimitable Tom O’Toole who has turned it into the uber-bakery with some of the best baked products available anywhere seven days a week.

Other local foods and produce that food lovers can sample include mustards, honey, fresh fruit from the many orchards and olives. Many of these local foods are used proudly in the local restaurants dishes and seasonal menus, which provides unique flavors that attract food lovers time and time again.

There is more to town than food however, and one of the most popular activities among tourists and visitors is gold panning at Sebastopol Park. During the gold rush in the 19th century this was a popular site for people from all around the world to try their luck. The location also has strong historical importance as a place that Australian bushranger Ned Kelly tried to outrun the cops.

In the historical precinct of town, there are many different buildings that offer an insight into life in a gold mining town in the 19th century. Some of the buildings that can be visited on a historical ticket over two days include: police stables and lock up, the town hall, Robert O’Hara museum, Courthouse, Telegraph Station, Gold Warden’s Office, Chinese Protectors Office and Gold Office.

For active types the hills surrounding Beechworth offer a great chance to explore and get to know the Australian bush made legendary in these parts by Ned Kelly a national hero. The scenery is impressive and slides through some interesting historical spots. There is much to recommend in this corner of north east Victoria that makes for a fascinating and memorable vacation for local and international tourists alike. The town offers an impressive mix of cultural and historical sites as well as yummy food, great restaurants and outdoor activities that leave an impression on the visitor.
