The US Open has been held since 1881, making it one of the oldest tennis tournaments in the world. The US Open is the final tournament in the 4 tournament Grand Slam held each year, running from the end of August through the beginning of September. This tournament features championships in five events: Men’s and Women’s Singles and doubles as well as mixed doubles. There are also junior and senior events and even wheelchair events.
The US Open is different from the other tournaments in the Grand Slam like the Wimbledon. The US Tennis Open winners are determined by the person that wins the final set tie breaks. In the other tournaments the winners are determined by whoever wins by two games starting at the fifth set for the men and the third set for the women.
Like the rest of the Grand Slam, the US Open is a prestigious event; while there is no royalty in attendance as at Wimbledon, the tournament draws thousands of people from all over the world. The players compete for over $20 million in prizes, with the purses being larger than in the other Grand Slam tournaments. There are more than 600 players in each year’s tournament.
The tournament is held in New York City at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center located at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens. The events in this tournament are held on acrylic courts instead of grass as at Wimbledon.
US Tennis Open Winners receive prize money for their victory. The singles tournaments for men and women give cash prizes to many different people in many ways. This is what makes the US Open a big reason that people want to play. That is because there is a bigger chance for people to go home with money at this tournament in the Grand Slam than any other tournament. The winner receives $1.5 million, runners-up receive $750,000, Semifinalists receive $320,000, quarterfinalists receive $160,000, round of 16 receives $80,000, third round wins $46,000, second round wins $30,000, and the first round wins $18,500. You can win a big prize even if you do not make it all the way as the final winner.
US Open winners in doubles events also receive large cash prizes. Doubles winners split a total of $1.8 million. There is also half a million dollars in prize money to be won in the mixed doubles. The qualifying 128 draw events for both men and women pay up to one million – in total, there is over $20 million dollars in prize money to be won in this tournament.
With so much to be won and the prestige of competing in a Grand Slam tournament, professional tennis players are always interested in this tournament. There are prizes given to the winners in many different events, giving players a much better chance to go home with a prize than in other tournaments; this generates a lot of excitement among fans as well, which makes this tournament incredibly popular year after year.
