If you’ve never had things to do in Tennessee, then terms like Chilhowee, …Pigeon, Forge, …Chickamauga, …Chattanooga, …Soddy-Daisy, and French Broad sound like they have been picked out of comic books. In fact these are some of the oddest and wackiest places with simply wonderful names in the volunteer state of Tennessee.
For United States history buffs, vacations in Tennessee can be steeped in tradition, history and the realization that despite the horrible tragedies that the Civil War brought, people of the state were resilient and in rebuilding their beautiful state once peace once again came to the land. And even if you’re not a Civil War fan, Tennessee still has plenty of great activities for the entire family. For instance, the Great Smokey Mountains provides a rugged beauty in one the highest areas in the eastern United States.
In fact, Congress has designated the entire state as the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area. Just visiting the site of any of these battles and you can almost feel the cannon blasts, smell the smoke and hear the screams of men as they lay wounded and dying. In fact, for paranormal buffs, Tennessee is considered the fifth most haunted state in the country.
For those interested more in facts than in myths, vacations in Tennessee are steeped in tradition, history and the realization of its resilience which helped to put the state and the people back on their feet despite the many horrible tragedies of the Civil War. The people rebuilt their beautiful state once their beloved land was at peace again. Even if you’re not interested in the Civil War, Tennessee still offers plenty of fu things to do for the entire family. Being one of the highest areas in the US, the Great Smokey Mountains provide a rugged beauty which seems to have descended from heaven itself.
The Great Smokey Mountains National Park, located in the southern Appalachian Mountains is so named because of the “smoke” that seems to hang over the area, giving an eerie yet peaceful feeling. Its 500,000 acres of forest is one of the largest protected land areas east of the Rocky Mountains. And, while it’s not as large as the millions of acres of land in other national parks, such as Yellowstone, it’s still a wildly diverse area with enormous varieties of animal and plant life and guaranteed to give nature lovers who plan their vacations in Tennessee a thrill.
Tennessee is also home to some vibrant and exciting cities if you are looking for that sort of vibe on your holiday. Memphis is definitely the big city that draws all the crowds. One of the best times to visit is in May during the annual barbecue festival where people come from across the country to pit their cooking skills against the best in the business. From beef to poultry and the country favorite, ribs, there is meat aplenty, to satisfy any craving. It is a great opportunity to hang with the locals and enjoy good old fashioned Southern hospitality at a quintessential American cook-off. And for fans of the King, Graceland is not too far away and serves as a shrine to the late Elvis Presley.
For the music lover, vacations in Tennessee can be a once in a lifetime experience. Nashville is the country music capitol of the world and is home to the world famous Grand Ole Opry. Of course, in addition to music, the area around Nashville boasts wonderful family vacation activities such as boating, fishing, golf and other outdoor recreational sports. However, it’s the music itself that draws people to the city where you can walk into a tiny little hole-in-the-wall and hear country, bluegrass or Appalachian music.
With so many places to visit, the problem is not having enough time to do everything you want to do in the beautiful, friendly state of Tennessee.
