Understanding the Difference between Mild and Full Bodied Cigars

January 10th, 2011 by , under Travel and Leisure. No Comments

There is a lot of confusion surrounding some common terms used to describe cigars. For instance, what is the difference between mild and full bodied cigars? Cigars are available in several different “bodies” and each one has different characteristics. Knowing the difference will help ensure that you know what to expect from your smoke, whether you keep your cigars in a humidor or only purchase a few at a time to enjoy at your leisure.

Let’s address the last question first. Whether you choose to keep your smokes in a cigar humidor or you choose to keep only a few on hand and plan to smoke them quickly, the difference between body and strength is an important one. Body refers to the flavor and complexity of a cigar’s taste. Strength refers to, well, strength. There are full bodied cigars without a lot of strength, just as there are mild bodied cigars with a label that says full strength.

Now, to address the question of mild versus full bodied, body refers to the complexity of the cigar’s flavor. Therefore, a mild bodied cigar will not have as complex a flavor as a full bodied cigar, and the smoke will be lighter on your palate. A full bodied cigar might be termed “spicier” than a mild cigar, and a medium bodied cigar falls between these two extremes, though there are some that fall on either side of the line. When you first get started in the world of cigar smoking, you might decide that smoking a mild bodied cigar is best. If you have little experience with tobacco, this might be the best course of action.

However, do not limit yourself to just mild bodied smokes. It’s best to experiment with different brands, different tobacco blends and different bodies. You might find that you prefer one tobacco blend in a mild version, while another tobacco blend in a full bodied cigar is also enjoyable. Remember that sampling different cigars and different blends is all part and parcel of really enjoying your smoke. Over time, you will learn to tell what kind of body you might find in different cigars simply by the types of tobacco used, the type of wrapper and even the manufacturer. However, this will take time, and during that time, you should enjoy yourself as much as possible.
