Relighting a Cigar

January 29th, 2010 by Dave Sabot, under Travel and Leisure. No Comments

Gourmet cigars can cost a fair bit of money and, given that they’re designed to offer a long smoke, one may well find themselves having to put the cigar out before they’re able to finish it. Cigars, fortunately, can be relit. While there will be a bit of change in flavor, there are ways in which one can mitigate this and the cigar will still taste excellent, even on the second light.

There will be an ash at the foot of the cigar. There are two ways to deal with this. One may simply knock the ash off and relight the cigar where it stopped burning or they may trim the cigar back to the point where fresh tobacco is exposed. Generally, trimming the cigar back a little will make it taste a bit smoother. The change in taste results from the buildup of tar in the tobacco as it is smoked so there is some change that is unavoidable no matter how far one trims back the wrapper before relighting the cigar.

The tobacco in the center of the cigar will likely have a different appearance than that around the edges. In most cases, it will be a bit darker. This is nothing to worry about and the cigar will smoke fine. The lighting process for relighting a cigar is identical to the first light, involving turning the cigar over the flame. Torch lighters, liquid-fuel lighters or butane lighters will work fine, there is nothing at all that differs in the lighting process.

Some individuals prefer to blow the first puff back through the cigar. This can help mitigate the taste of tar build-up in the tobacco and spares the smoker a harsh draw off of the cigar. Some smokers blow through the cigar before lighting it, as well, especially if the cigar has only recently been extinguished or gone out in which case there may be old smoke hanging around in the wrapper.

Relight the cigar just as one would light a fresh cigar. The first puff may taste a bit strong but the taste will generally become mellower as one continues smoking. By the time the cigar is burning nice and hot, there should be little appreciable difference in the taste. Good cigars are priced in a way that makes throwing half of one away a total waste. Relighting a half-smoked cigar is sensible in terms of money and, of course, taste!

Saving Dehydrated Cigars

January 6th, 2010 by Dave Sabot, under Travel and Leisure. No Comments

If there is one tragedy where a box of high-quality cigars is concerned it would be in their being ignored and going stale. While many people wrongly believe that a sealed box of cigars is impervious to many common problems, the fact of the matter is that they are not packaged to retain their best qualities. This is the reason that the best tobacconists keep their cigars in proper storage cabinets with humidifiers and hygrometers fully engaged.

In fact, among all of the cigar accessories available, the humidor is one of the most important. This is especially true when someone is attempting to restore a dehydrated cigar, or even a whole box of cigars that have become withered and stale due to exposure to an unstable environment. The key to successfully returning any cigar to a state in which it can be enjoyed is patience. This is because there is a great deal of time required before the cigar is back near its original state.

The next step requires you to buy a bottle of distilled water which is available at almost any pharmacy, and to dampen a brand new sponge with this water. Ring it out well and place this in the bag with the cigars, but be sure that the sponge is not in contact with any of them. Leave this setup in the closet for another week to ten days. This part of the process is going to slowly rehydrate the cigars without overdoing it and causing them to split wide open.

After the two to four day period, a small sponge which has been dampened with distilled water should be added to the container. It is important that the sponge is not touching any of the cigars, and that the container is kept at a constant temperature and steady level of humidity. The cigars with the dampened sponge should be left alone for another ten days to allow the cigars to slowly hydrate; otherwise a sudden rush of humidity would cause the leaves wrapping the cigars to burst.

If you want to age cigars that have been dehydrated, you simply follow this same process and leave them in the humidor for another full calendar year. The humidity level must be at seventy percent and the ambient temperature at seventy degrees for the process to work successfully.

The Proper Way to Store Cigars

December 30th, 2009 by Dave Sabot, under Travel and Leisure. No Comments

If there is one very common question posed by those who enjoy buying and smoking high-quality cigars it is “Do you remove the plastic wrapper when storing in a humidor?” Unfortunately, this is a question that doesn’t have an authoritative answer. Many experts would simply reply that it is a matter of preference, but there are some benefits in choosing to use the humidor AND leaving the cigars in their wrappers while inside the well controlled environment.

Let’s first look at cigar wrappers in general and understand how they can be of tremendous benefit to a true aficionado. Firstly, they are made of a material known as cellophane. This has the feel of traditional plastic, with the great exception that it is actually a porous or breathable material. Cellophane can prevent the actual wrapper or leaf of the cigar from sustaining damages, and will also deliver a host of other beneficial services. For instance, if you leave a cigar in its wrapper outside of a controlled-environment it will go stale and be completely ruined in only a matter of days. This is because the air and moisture of the environment can travel in an out of the pores of the wrapper and leave it open to flavor and moisture loss unless it is put into a humid and controlled environment.

One thing that all enthusiasts wonder is if they should leave their gourmet cigars in the special wrappers in which they arrive when they place them inside of their humidors. Well, this can be answered quite simply – yes. Though there is much debate on the issue, most experts agree that the wrappers can reduce the occurrence of flavor mixing that is a problem with unwrapped cigars, and the wrappers can also help the special cigar cutters to remain sharper and cleaner too.

So, leaving a cigar in its cellophane wrapping protects it from harm, reduces the amount of flavor that is exchanged with neighboring cigars, and it also preserves the life of the cigar cutter blades. That’s right; when someone keeps their cigars in their wrappers during the cutting process the blades stay a bit cleaner and sharper, enjoying a significantly longer life span.

This all adds up to a somewhat clear-cut answer, which is to opt for leaving the cigar in its original cellophane wrapper whether it remains in the box in which it was purchased or in a climate controlled environment instead.

Cigar Styles and Sizes

December 19th, 2009 by Dave Sabot, under Travel and Leisure. No Comments

If you are new to cigar smoking, you probably know that cigars come in an extremely wide variety of styles and sizes. The style and size of cigar can have a great impact on how the smoking experience will be and can be a determining factor of your personal level of enjoyment. For instance, taste is probably the number one factor that will vary depending on style and size as well as the physical temperature of the smoke that is drawn from the cigar. With a little knowledge of the difference in styles and sizes of cigars, you can assure that your smoking experience will be a positive one.

Style Variations

Cylindrical – The cylindrical tube is the most common cigar style. These allow even airflow through the cigar’s body and are, coincidentally, the easiest to make. Normally, the cap on this type of cigar is rounded. This is a very common style offered by most cigar manufacturers

Torpedo – Less common than the cylindrical style, the torpedo is the another style of cigar. There is a more focused flow of air though the body of the cigar thanks to the tapered end. The torpedo style uses a funnel end that is commonly found at the head, or cap. However some cigar companies put the funnel at the let end, or foot.

Sizes

You need to know how the size affects the experience of the cigar before you decide to light it up. The selection of cigar size will contribute to many varying factors in your smoking experience.

Length – Longer cigars are usually preferable, simply because they provide a much cooler smoke and greater enjoyment. They are also usually smoother tasting and lack the harshness associated with shorter cigars.

Diameter -Ring gauge (diameter) of a cigar also plays a determining factor. This cigars generally have harsher smoke and will burn at a faster rate. However, a cigar that is wider will generally burn more slowly and will provide a smoother smoking experience.

One thing to keep in mind before you determine what style and size of cigar to light up, is that fatter cigars generally cost a bit more money. Obviously, it requires more tobacco and materials to create the cigar. Essentially, you are paying more money because you are getting more cigar.
