Singapore Airlines has got the best qualifications when it comes to airline industry. It remains as the eighth major carrier in Asia and also positions itself as the sixth among the international passengers carried. When we consider the market capitalization, it still remains as the largest carrier in the world. It was listed as the 17th most admired company by fortune magazine in 2007.it is best known for setting new trends and innovative service and it always remained profitable.
The airlines began operations with a chartered flight from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur in 1947. Weekly flights were soon scheduled to Ipoh and Panang. At the time it was Malayan Airways Limited, incorporated by Imperial Airways, Ocean Steamship Company of Liverpool and Straits Steamship Company of Singapore. The company grew over the next few decades. Political disagreements brought Singapore Airlines into being in 1972.
During the 1970s and 80s, the airline grew rapidly adding destinations in India, Asia, the United States, Canada and Europe. Southern Africa was added in the 1990s. SIA offered the first nonstop flights between the United States and Singapore in 2004.
SAI offers 65 destinations in 35 countries from its primary hub in Singapore. With its subsidiary SilkAir, SAI connects Singapore with more international destinations than any other Southeast Asian airline. Singapore Airlines is a member of the Star Alliance and has codeshare agreements with SilkAir, Virgin Atlantic, Malaysia Airlines, Royal Brunei and Airlines.
Currently the Singapore Airlines fleet includes 76 aircraft with an average age of less than six and a half years of use. SAI has a policy of keeping a young fleet, so it renews is fleet often. Singapore Airlines recently spent $570 million revamping its cabin and in-flight service.
In a truly unique offering, Singapore Airlines Suites class consists of separate compartments with walls and doors. Designed by a French luxury yacht designer, it is offered only on the new Airbus A380. Leather seats, an LCD TV screen mounted on the wall, and a separate bed are additional features of the class beyond first.
First class comes in three other variations on Singapore Airlines. The New First Class features leather and mahogany seats with LCD TV screens. Seats fold out into a flat bed. First Class SkySuites recline into a bed, offer LCD TV screens, and are upholstered in leather.
Business class offers New Business Class with leather seats that convert to fully flat beds, personal TV screens, in-seat power supply and USB ports. Also in Business lass SpaceBed seats convert into angled flat beds and feature retractable personal televisions. The Ultimo business class seats do not convert into beds.
Economy class seating has personal television screens, footrests and adjustable headrests. Newer seats also offer in-seat power. All classes offer World Gourmet Cuisine featuring regional dishes and popular local fare.
There are two frequent flyer programs currently being offered by Sigapore Airlines. They include the KrisFlyer and the PSS Club.KrisFlyer miles are earned and cashed in on SAIs services and KrisFlyer associates which comprise; Star Alliance members, SilkAir, Virgin Atlantic, hotels and car rental firms. For the customers who choose to fly Airline Suites or Business Class on both Singapore Airlines and SilkAir, they earn PSS, Priority Passenger Service value points.
