Memories Of A Used Jeep

I have spent my elementary years in a rustic town up in the highlands of a mountainous province in the Philippines. Distance wise, it really wasn’t that far but because of the road conditions back then, the nearest city was about 6 hours away and it would take 8 hours to get to my hometown.
My grandpa was a city boy when he was younger but later decided to live and embrace rural life. Once a month, he would take us down to our hometown on a long ride to visit our relatives. During those days when we arrive in the city, I would be dying with envy of the people who rode automobiles with rolled up windows and air conditioning. I would be dreaming of arriving in my hometown in an air conditioned car protected from the heat and dust I hated so much back then.
You can imagine how astonishing it is for me, to hear people and friends approach my grandpa and talk to him about his amazing jeep, how quick and easy it is for us to get to our hometown from where we came from. I would hear them say that they would be willing to trade their automobiles for my grandpa’s jeep. Are they crazy? They have a brand new rig, and ours was a second hand contraption.
That old jeep was purchased second hand by my grandfather. Firstly, he had it repainted a deep brown shade for a new look. Originally, the jeep didn’t have comfortable front seats so grandpa found some seats of an old car and had it reupholstered.
The trips the jeep makes were really long ones and my grandfather always received rations and gasoline gifts from his company. Some were gifts from uncles who were so fond of him. He always had that effect on people. A lot of them wanted to please my grandfather. The original gasoline tank just wouldn’t do so he had found a tank from a big truck and had it installed under the front seats and it occupied the whole row.
He had new leather roofings installed on the jeep. Had an electric fan and he even had his small portable TV attached to our rig. I had to admit, despite my wanting a new automobile for a ride, looking back, we did had an awesome ride.
The jeep served me from the third grade, and I remembered my grandpa took me to the airport when I was leaving to attend college in the capital. It served me then for more than a decade already. When I came home after graduation, sadly he was too old to make the trip. The jeep was still serving him though.
That old jeep might have been pre-owned when we got it, but it fared and served better than all the other vehicles that we had. It has by far exceeded all the others when it came to performance and the memories we had with that old timer is by far more precious than any other ride we had.
It is true that a used car that is cared and loved for holds a greater value than anything you could buy new. Ours gave us the ride of our lives.
