It has been said that information is power, so the more information someone has, the more powerful they can become. Considering this statement, it is important for parents to understand that their children need a good education so they can have an advantage in our society.
Education is not just about going to school or doing homework, because it also means reading books. One of the best things a parent can to for their kids is to create a culture and atmosphere of reading in the home. There are a couple of suggestions to consider, but the first one is to always start reading to kids when they are very young.
Many have happy memories of being read to when they were little, and bedtime stories were happy times. Your child needs to have those experiences as well, and keeping books in their room to read will help them get used to having reading be a regular part of life.
Kids who are raised with books around will always have good feelings of familiarity towards them, and as they get older they will want to be near books. This will develop the need to have books within arm’s reach which will contribute to a love for reading. Constant encouragement is also important.
Being a reading role model for your child, they can imitate you and develop a love for reading. Your children always notice what their parents do, and often mimic them. This is great with reading, and if they see how you enjoy it, they may learn to as well. Let them see you reading a variety of different things.
Also, when you buy books for children, make sure they are topics and subjects that interest them. Reading is so much more fun when it is about stuff that is interesting. Keep reminding them and inspiring them to expand their horizons through reading.
Once you have determined they have started to embrace reading, now is the time to let them get their own books. Having them pick their own titles will make reading more fun.
This will give them freedom and independence. It can also encourage them to want to devour all kinds of books with the desire to always read more.
