Portugal has various amazing things to offer to its visitors, and one of those is the region of Algarve. It is the southernmost point of Portugal, and is situated next to the Atlantic Ocean. As it has clean beaches it is a one of the favorite tourist destinations. There are almost two hundred kilometers of sandy beaches, and the region is also not at all expensive for spending vacations.
In spite of being a very small region it has a rich history. Portugal produced some well recognised explorers in the world who left their mark on the variety of colonies they helped the country discover. As the Romans occupied this area, there are a lot of Roman ruins still to be seen in Algarve, and the ones that should not be missed are the Milreu ruins.
If you are courageous, you should plan a trip to the Alentejo in order to have a look at the Roman temple at Evora. This is situated in the centre of the city and its history can be dated back to the 2nd century. It is one of the finest tombstones in Portugal from the Roman period.
Algarve was also held by the Moors in the earlier period, and there is a lot of evidence of this in the construction and stoneware of the region. Make sure you must see the castle at Silves which was built by the Arabs in the 11th century. This castle is built with sandstone and is worth visiting undeniably. Also be sure that you see Lagos which is the old inner city in protective walls. You would see very narrow streets, old shops, and great food.
Algarve is well-known for its Piri Piri Chicken which can be bought all over the region. There is also great variety of seafood dishes that you should not miss at all, and even sweets made out of dried fruits that you will find yourself buying loads to take back home. You should try the acordas and the cataplanas, but as both are seafood so you will only admire them if you like seafood. You could also give a try to the chicken based cerejada. For sweets, make sure you must try Don Rodrigo or Morgado.
Algarve is the most renowned tourist destination in the country, together with one of the most admired spots for tourists in Europe. With its long shoreline, sandbanks, and sandy beaches the place has unlimited attractions to offer as far as beach activities are concerned. You can swim, snorkel, surf, and do scuba diving around the island and actually enjoy the beach.
The Mediterranean weather is great for tourists, and you could either spend your day relaxing by the beach or visiting one of the places stated above. You can also enjoy the local food and the mouth watering seafood options whilst you are here as you would not find them anywhere else.
