When Rev. Edward Sorin set up the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, he was proposing a university that would provide a service to communities of USA. It is a Catholic university and is in the neighbourhood of South Bend. There are varied places for accommodation and the tours to the University include the stunning Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
The Football Hall of fame, museums and golf courses, and the South Bend Silver Hawks deserve a visit. A large Amish community is nearby giving an opportunity to observe an alternate lifestyle. The yearly Notre Dame football game attracts huge numbers of fans.
The campus is huge covering 1,250 acres and has 130 historical buildings with two beautiful lakes providing for pleasant walks and excursions. The mural of Christ as a Teacher is 132 foot high in a 14 storey Hesburgh Library building. An early buildings in the original campus is home to very well-known Golden Dome visited by tourists from all over.

The Graduate School began in 1918 has has 25 institutes and departments. These in turn run 32 master’s and 23 doctoral programmes. The continued production of top quality graduates from the Arts and Letters, Engineering, Architecture, Science and Business schools is to be expected therefore.
Ten percent of the students give up a year of their post graduate time to participate in community programmes in other countries and in the US. Most other students will engage in some form of volunteering in the local community during their undergraduate studies. This is due to the transference of the traditional values of the institution to each generation of students as such a high percentage live on campus during their studies.
