A hamster is a solitary pet and they should live on their own, in their own in their hamster cage. Their hamster cage should be the biggest hamster cage you have room for or can afford. The average sized cage is more or less one square foot in size, but as previously stated buying a larger hamster cage is more preferable.
Not only will your pet hamster love you more for getting it a bigger hamster cage, it will be far happier with the additional space too. It is advisable to only keep 1 hamster per cage as they are very territorial and will fight each other. This can lead to them often seriously hurting each other, except for dwarf hamsters who tend to be more sociable, but it is still a good idea to only keep 1 per cage.
Hamsters are curious animals and love to explore their hamster cage, but you should never forget a hamster is a very good escape artist. So you need to keep this in mind when choosing its cage, if you decide on one of the wire cages then make for sure the gap between the bars is narrow enough to stop your hamster escaping. This applies even more so if you decide to keep a dwarf hamster as a pet!
Hamsters are able to open the doors on some cages, so if you are in doubt add an additional quick release fastener to the door to keep your hamster safe in its cage.
A hamster should have some toys to help keep it entertained and a exercise wheel is recommended as well. Hamsters are nocturnal and will be doing a lot of their playing, exercising and eating at nighttime. Because of this you need to make sure the toys and especially the wheel, are quiet when they are in use. This applies even more so if the cage is to be kept in your bedroom.
When living in a residence where keeping pets is restricted taking a hamster as a pet might just the way around this problem. It is great for your kids to have a pet like hamster as they will easily learn how to take care of a pet hamster while having fun with it.
