Fantastic Scottish Island Vacations And The Isle Of Harris

Are you mulling over having a holiday in the United Kingdom? Even though the majority of visitors having a vacation in the U.K. decide to stay in famous places such as London, other folk would rather take a vacation in Scotland. In the following article I introduce the Isle of Harris and why it is such a superb vacation destination.

Even though London may have some of the best galleries and museums in the whole of Britain and some of the most famous tourist attractions the capital city of England fails to appeal to all types of tourist.

Some folk much prefer vacations which are far less hectic while other folk much prefer more adrenalin packed vacations such as sports vacations. Interestingly the Isle of Harris, in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, is perfect for both types of tourist.

Like a great many other folk spending most of my summer vacation on the beach does not excite me. Please do not get the wrong idea, I do enjoy a relaxing visit to a beach, and the Isle of Harris certainly features some of the most picturesque beaches in Scotland (and the UK), but, I also enjoy spending time elsewhere while on a vacation. I really like to spend time just soaking in the atmosphere of the place, I like to sample the local food and culture. To be honest I just like to experience something new each year and I try very hard trying to discover somewhere one hundred percent different. This is why, most probably, I enjoy visiting the Hebrides island named the Isle of Harris and why I regularly choose to stay in self catering houses on the Isle of Harris.

One of the primary reasons people visit the Isle of Harris is to enjoy the the landscape and culture of the islands. The culture of the Isle of Harris has, over 100′s of years been powerfully influenced by the Scottish, English, Celtic and Norse races. Today the vast majority of folk speak in the Gaelic language and though some speak English, it is most likely their second language. The folk of the Isle of Harris are amongst the friendliest on earth and their hospitality is known throughout the word. The people of the Isle of Harris are incredibly proud of the awesome beauty of the island and go to some length to keep the island very tidy so it is immensely important not to leave any litter behind.

It is important to keep in mind that discarded litter doesn’t just make the place look a mess it is also highly dangerous to wildlife.

Another vital point to remember is that the roads on the Isle of Harris are completely different to those found on the Scottish mainland single track roads are very common and you will will be required to use passing places to let oncoming traffic past and also let traffic from behind to pass too. All you need do is come to a halt on the left. But, If it is a large vehicle wishing to get past and the passing place is on the right hand side of the road you may carefully pull over into to it to allow the large vehicle pass easily but at all times be careful not to drive off the road too much.

I hope that my above article sufficiently interests you in taking a short break or vacation on the Isle of Harris. Large numbers of people the Scotland’s Outer Hebrides choose to stay in two vacation destinations. There are a few other islands to visit including North Uist, South Uist and Lewis. Why not think about staying in a Isle of Harris self catering house for a few days and then book a room in a North Uist hotel or a hotel on South Uist for the rest of your vacation?

If you are considering a Uist vacation please take a look at our listings of South Uist hotels and Hotels in North Uist
