World Travelers Discover the Wonders of Cyprus

Article by John Trodey

Since 2004, when Cyprus joined the European Union, Cyprus has welcomed millions of tourists every year, who in larger numbers are discovering what a beautiful and historic island this is. Most people who visit Cyprus land in Larnaca, location of the island?s largest international airport, or in Paphos, home of the second largest airport and famed for its climate and rich Roman history.

The island is fairly compact, so it?s reasonable to try to see several parts of Cyprus on your visit. The beaches of the Karpas Peninsula, the charming little villages of the Akamas Peninsula, and the citrus groves in Morfou are just a few of the many wonderful places Cyprus offers visitors. The Troodos Mountains, with its monasteries, beautiful churches, and mountain resorts are also very popular with visitors. Larnaca is a charming blend of the old and the new, and Nicosia and Limassol are also vibrant destinations for tourists.

Traveling between the South and the North is easier now than it used to be, but be careful that you only cross at designated checkpoints. Cyprus generally is a very safe place to travel, with a minimal crime rate. Of course, you?re advised to lock your hotel room and keep your personal valuables secure. The only problems you really risk are in the places with high concentrations of tourists in high season, where you could encounter petty theft and drunkenness. But in general, Cyprus is a lovely and safe place to visit.

The months from July to September are the hottest and the most crowded as far as vacationers, with August being the peak of the tourist season. Accommodations are likely to be more expensive during this time, so if your budget is stricter, you would be advised to avoid these months. Fortunately, however, the weather in Cyprus is beautiful for much of the year, with the ?shoulder? months of May and October being great times to visit. Though winters don?t get especially cold (except in the Troodos, where there is actually a winter ski season), you will encounter much more rain during the winter months.

As for getting around Cyprus, you won?t find a train network or domestic air services. The road infrastructure is good, and roads are well-marked. In Cyprus, driving is on the left side of the road, as in the UK. Many people traveling in Cyprus use taxi services rather than renting a car. The licensed taxi services are clean, safe, well-maintained, and the drivers generally are fluent in English. They are also well-versed in airport and inter-city transfers and many provide chauffeured tours throughout Cyprus.

Compared with a vacation in Western Europe, travel to Cyprus is inexpensive. The island is compact, naturally beautiful, exceptionally rich in history, and by all accounts welcoming and friendly. If you are interested in traveling to Cyprus, do read up first, because the cultural and historical sites are almost overwhelming in number. If you don?t know where to begin, use a web directory for Cyprus, where you can find websites that have been vetted for content and usefulness. This way you can learn all you need to know before you set off for an unforgettable stay in Cyprus.
