If you are applying for a spousal visa for the United States, you will be asked to submit to an interview with the immigration officers. These interviews are notoriously tough and you must be well prepared for immigration interview questions.
Be ready to answer all manner of personal questions about you, your spouse and your relationship. It is not fun to have your personal life observed by all and sundry, but it is an unfortunately necessary part of the process. They are trying to determine that your relationship is real and continued and to do that they have to ask probing questions.
You may be interviewed together or separately, but it is common to be split up and then the answers will be analyzed for inconsistencies. Know all about your spouse’s likes and dislikes, their life story, their favorite places, songs, food, colors and even the color of underwear they are wearing.
Do have knowledge of your spouses assets such as the make and model of their car, how much rent they pay, mortgage payments, credit cards and so on. Also you should be able to describe what your spouse’s house looks like including the type of furniture, the make of the stereo and TV, the color of the walls and other features of the house.
When applying for the visa you should have as much written evidence as you can gather that the two of you are a couple. Jointly named bills, joint banks accounts and health insurance and membership of clubs will all help to prove that your relationship is real. Make sure you bring the originals and copies to the interview. Bring along photos of the two of you at different social gatherings as well.
It is important that you have friends or family that are US citizens who will verify your relationship in writing. Bring declarations by them that have been notarized to the interview with copies. You must also know all about your spouse’s family.
Arrive at the interview punctually and prepared with all the forms and written evidence that you need. You should also ensure that you are dressed appropriately for such a formal interview in neat and tidy clothes, clean shaven if you are a man and tidy hair.
Don’t joke around with the immigration officer. Jokes made about drug trafficking, people smuggling, marriages of convenience and terrorism are not taken in good spirit. Don’t become defensive or have a bad attitude towards the interviewer it will not help your case.
If you don’t understand a question then don’t answer it until you understand clearly what they are asking. If English is not your first language or you are worried about your English level, it is perfectly ok to take an interpreter with you.
The interview is an integral part of the visa process. By preparing well for the interview with your spouse you are less likely to have any problems with obtaining your visa. Be honest at all times in the interview as they are trained in body language to know when you are lying and they will already know everything about you before you arrive anyway.
There are numerous dos and don’ts to immigration interview questions that will help you to be 100percent prepared, successfully complete your interview and land your visa. Find out all you need to know about the green card interview now!
