Antique posters, approximately over an age of fifty years can be labeled ‘Vintage posters’. Posters were the oldest form of advertising. About half a century back, when the reaches of television or other forms of media available today were not present, posters were regarded the best way of mass communication. Printed colour posters were extensively utilized for all kinds of announcements & advertisements. They were held to be the best way of visual media through which public announcements, ads or campaigns were done.
As most of these posters were impressed in huge volume & were meant to be displayed for street ads, they were not meant to last for long. Commonly, cheap paper was used for this purpose. Due to this reason, many of the vintage posters have deteriorated or have been completely damaged and lost. Even the ones that seem to have persisted the scourges of time and been stored away carefully; still have one or more minor damages. There are very rare examples where the vintage posters accessible today have been saved carefully and available in good condition.
Even if the vintage poster that you buy now is in considerably good form, there is all possibility that its existing condition might degenerate in the next few years. As you are most likely to pay well for your poster, you might as well determine that you take the essential care to safeguard them and make sure that they stay in a good condition for many more years down the line.
Posters are highly sensitive to light. Light radiations tend to cause permanent damage to your precious poster. It is better to frame your posters with UV-resistant glass. The other major preventive is acid. It eats away on your paper. Most of papers on which the vintage posters were published were of low quality & hence will have high acid substance. The consequence of acid makes the paper yellow with age & ultimately reduces it to dust. It is best to use acid-free matting and supporting while framing your poster. You should also ascertain that while framing the poster, the glass does not touch the paper. Contact with glass will cause humidity to damage your poster. It is better to put up a spacer between the glass & the actual poster.
