This year could be the best time in ages to take a well deserved holiday because the travel industry is having financial difficulties in these slow economic times. You can find really cheap airfares and last minute flights, exclusive hotels, all inclusive resorts and family resorts, and discount cruises as well as last minute cruises on the web or at your local travel agency. It stands to reason that if any airplane, resort, hotel, or cruise ship is not fully booked, that represents a loss of income that can not be recouped, so this is your time to latch on to the best travel deals in years.

When you search for holiday air flights on the internet you should first look at websites that have ticket price listings for multiple airlines. That way you can compare flight prices side by side. By searching for air consolidators you will find that they have reserved blocks of cheap flight tickets from many airlines. One well-known major discount airline you should also look up is Southwest Airlines which isn’t usually included by the air consolidator or multiple commercial airline websites.

If you plan to travel to Europe there are many European airlines that offer incredibly low fares, some as low as $60 U.S., when you fly between countries within Europe. Ryanair is the top low cost airline in Europe. It flies to and from the United States as well.

Choice hotels, luxury resorts, as well as all inclusive resorts are now offering great bargains as they struggle to maintain full occupancy. On the web you can search the words, hotels, or hotel finder to locate multiple discount hotel rates. The same applies also to resorts. If you want to take your pet on holiday with you, search pet friendly hotels.

Another great source of reasonable accommodations are vacation rentals. These can include home owners who own holiday homes, cottages, or condos and now need to rent them because of the slow economy. There are also beach vacation rentals available at excellent great discounts.

Luxury cruises at really great discounts abound. One of the major advantages that Americans have is that the cruise lines are increasing their presence by adding a few more ports and increasing some sailings on both the East and West coasts of the United States. Cruise tours are generally comprised of both a cruise and land tour. You can opt for taking the cruise first to a destination port and then continue with the land portion of the tour. Or, vice versa. You can take the land excursion first and then board your ship for the luxury cruise.

If this is your first cruise, or you aren’t sure what you want in a cruise, it may make sense to deal with a travel agency that specialize in cheap cruises such as a cruise consolidator, by searching that phrase, or going to a local travel agency that has extensive experience in booking cruises.

Cruises are more complicated then booking cheap flights or cheap hotel rooms because there are numerous options which can be confusing to many first time cruisers. Some items to consider are the choice of state rooms (inside, ocean view and balcony), deck location of the state rooms, and dinner sitting options except on ships that have anytime dining, etc. Keep in mind that it doesn’t matter if you opt for the least expensive accommodation, you are always entitled to use all the standard amenities on the cruise ship. All quoted prices are usually quoted based on double occupancy. Always make sure that you are aware of the total cost of your cruise including all government fees and port charges.

When you book any vacation travel deals or holiday travel packages, its always best to pay with a credit card. That way you will have a record of all your trip transactions just in case a dispute arises with a bill, or a travel supplier runs into financial difficulty. Its highly unlikely the latter would happen, but if it does you’ll have a better chance of being reimbursed or rebooked.

Whether you take air flights for business, or holidays and vacations, you have probably lost luggage or know of a person that has. Here are some travel tips that may help you prevent this happening.

It’s estimated that there are more than a million bags that are lost by the airlines each year in the U.S. alone. How many get lost in the whole world is anyone’s guess. Here are a few tips that may help you recover your bags if they should they get lost.

Attach a couple of tags with your name, home address, and phone number to the handle and zipper-pulls of every bag that you are checking. There’s less of a chance that every tag could get torn off when in transit. Make sure that you’ve taken off any old airline tags that are still on your luggage as they could confuse the baggage handlers.

Be sure to place the same contact information, including a copy of your itinerary and your destination address inside each piece luggage. That way, if they do get lost and are found in time, they could be forwarded to your hotel.

Pick luggage with preferably a bright or odd color that will stand out among all black and brown bags. Know which brand name of the luggage that you are using and attach a small colorful scarf or ribbon to the handle to make identification easier. Stick decals or a contrasting colored tape to each side of the bags so they are easier to find as it goes around the carousel. Remember these details, or better still, take a digital photo of your luggage just before you go and bring it with you. This will help the lost luggage staff at the airport locate your bags if they get lost in transit and turn up at their office. It will also help if you do have to make a claim.

It can help if you make a list of what you have in your luggage and carry that list in you carry-on bag. The chance of your checked luggage getting lost in transit increases when you have delayed, or connecting flights. Pack your valuables, including your laptop or Blackberry, travel documents, prescriptions, etc., in your carry-on luggage. It’s best to pack only the things you can afford to lose in your checked baggage. Analysts believe the airline industry’s problem of lost luggage is not going to go away anytime soon.

What should you do your luggage gets lost?

Go immediately to the baggage claim office and file a claim. Many airlines have a twenty-four hour window of time starting from when your flight arrives to file and be eligible for compensation. You will receive a claim receipt to check the tracking of your luggage with the airline by phone, or on the airline’s website. Make sure you keep all your flight documents until the lost luggage problem is resolved.

How can you guarantee that the airlines won’t lose your luggage?

There are a number of companies like FedEx, DHL, or UPS, that will send your luggage in the United States, directly to your hotel or destination address for a very reasonable cost. If you are staying in a hotel or resort, your luggage will be taken to your room by a bellboy. When you consider that in the U.S. alone, over a million bags are lost by the airlines each year, this service may be well worth considering. If you are planning to travel by air to and from the countries inside Europe, First Luggage, at First Luggage.com, is one of the companies that can provide this service

People should be cautious when they travel on vacations and holidays to hot climates if they are not accustomed to the tropical sun and humidity. Severe sunburns, heatstroke, and heat exhaustion can cause serious medical problems, and even death. The information below may help you when you travel on a vacation or holiday to very hot climates.

Even though these sun related problems, sunburn, heatstroke, and heat exhaustion are not diseases, they can be very serious and could ruin your vacation. They say that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and this is particularly true when dealing with the sun. Keep in mind that the sun’s rays in the tropics are more intense between noon hour and three p.m., as well as at high altitudes, even if it’s a cloudy or overcast day.

How can you prevent getting a sunburn?

In general, the fairer or lighter your skin is, the easier you may sunburn. Even clouds offer little or no protection from a severe sunburn. So why take a chance of ruining your holiday when getting a painful sunburn is easy to protect against? To prevent getting a bad sunburn, especially if you sunburn easily, use a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30, or stronger if possible. Use the sunscreen liberally, wear a wide-brimmed sun hat, choose UVA & UVB protection certified sunglasses, and wear a long-sleeved shirt and slacks. Try to stay out of the sun between noon and three in the afternoon. Build up your exposure to the sun gradually, day by day. Limit the length of time that you spend in the sun to about fifteen minutes the first day, and increase your time in the sun gradually on subsequent days.

What can you do to treat a severe sunburn?

The pain of a sunburn can be eased by soaking in a cool bath three to four times a day. By adding some baking soda to each bath, it will help even more. Cool showers will more than likely hurt too much, and not be as effective or soothing as cool, relaxing baths. If you have headaches, or pain and swelling, you could take aspirin or other pain medication such as Advil or Ibuprofen. Don’t take any aspirin-based pain medications if you are on blood thinners or have an ulcer. If you are not sure if it’s safe to take any these pain medications, check with a doctor or medical clinic. To avoid dehydration, try and drink six to eight glasses of water a day. Don’t break any blisters if you can help it. Broken blisters can get infected easily, especially in the humid weather of the tropics. If they do break, you should wash them gently with soap and warm water.

If your sunburn does not appear to be getting better and you still have pain after a couple of days, you develop a high temperature or fever, have splitting headaches that won’t go away, vomit or have diarrhea, feel dizzy and confused, or your eyes hurt and light is bothering them, you must seek medical help right away.

What can you do to avoid heat exhaustion?

Heat exhaustion is absolutely preventable. If you wear a wide-brimmed sunhat, drink lots of liquids, and stay out of intense heat and humidity, you can you avoid this serious problem.

What should you do if you have the symptoms of heat exhaustion?

Heat exhaustion is caused by a combination of very high temperatures and humidity. This may result in the loss of fluids from your body through excess sweating. These fluids must be quickly replaced or heat exhaustion can result.

The symptoms include headaches, fatigue and lethargy, giddiness, and muscle cramps. The treatment is to immediately get out of the sun or heat and drink plenty of liquids. Commercial beverages containing electrolytes, such as Gatorade, are preferable. Don’t drink any alcohol. This will make your condition worse.

If you do not feel better and show positive signs of recovery in a very short period of time, have someone take you to a hospital immediately as your condition could quickly progress into a true medical emergency, heatstroke.

What must you immediately do if you get heat stroke?

When heat exhaustion is not successfully treated immediately, it can result in a very serious medical emergency. Heatstroke is characterized by high body temperatures of 102 to 106 degrees Fahrenheit, or 39 to 41 degrees Centigrade. There is also a cessation of sweating. The symptoms of heatstroke include flushed, red skin, headache and confusion which can progress into delirium and convulsions, and can be fatal.

Note: Someone must help you by quickly taking you out of the sun or heat and rushing you to a hospital immediately.

If you have flown on commercial flights, in small propeller aircraft, or on helicopters and have experienced the fear of flying you are not alone. Millions of people worldwide who travel by airlines on their holidays and vacations have experienced the same fear to a lesser or greater extent. There are also millions of people around the world that travel by automobile, bus, train just to avoid commercial air flights. Some vacationers will take cruises if they are close enough to drive to the cruise line departure ports.

Amazingly, even though air travel is approximately thirty times safer than traveling by car, you hardly hear about people that have a fear of driving. Maybe television, radio, internet and print media contribute to this fear when they graphically cover commercial airline crashes and the large number of air passengers that are injured or perish.

The fear of flying can be brought on by a number of concerns such as the fear of heights, the fear of takeoff and landing, the fear of falling, the fear of flying over water, the fear of crashing, the fear of flying at night, the feeling of loss of control causing panic attacks, air turbulence, stormy weather, terrorists or hijackers, motion sickness, claustrophobia such as the fear of confinement in the small space of an airplane cabin or being packed in like sardines with other passengers, as well as other phobias.

Some more symptoms of the fear of flying are mild nervousness to extreme anxiety, panic attacks, shortness of breath, tightness in your chest, chest pain, clammy hands, a headache, including nausea and vomiting.

If you feel your fear of flying is severe, you may want to consider enrolling in an intensive treatment program. However, if think your fear of flying is not severe, there are some things you can do that may help remedy this problem.

Firstly, sit in a seat over the airplane wings, preferably not a window seat, so you cant look down at the ground. When you are sitting over the wings you will also experience a smoother flight.

If possible, leave your seat belt on as much as possible, so if any air turbulence suddenly occurs, you wont get jarred or bounced about as much.

Eat light and try to avoid eating or drinking any food or beverage that contains caffeine, sugar, or alcohol.

It will help if you try to stay positive and always think only of positive thoughts.

You can occupy your mind by listening to soft, soothing music on your I-Pod.

Sometimes it may help to wear eye shades and sleep if you can.

You may feel less stressed if you can book a flight that leaves at an off-peak time as there are usually fewer airline passengers to contend with.

If you are thinking of taking any prescription or over-the-counter drugs to calm yourself down on your flight, be sure that you consult first with your family doctor or pharmacist. Keep in mind that if you are already taking prescriptions for pre-existing conditions, any new medication, even the over-the-counter ones, may interact adversely with them.

I have a true story that may help you with this problem. A number of years ago a good friend of mine had a real problem with the fear of flying. He was really concerned about dying in a plane crash. A funny thing is that he had no problem driving all over the country, or taking a bus or train when he traveled on his holidays.

Fortunately he got a job selling ads for a local community newspaper near a busy international airport. As he drove around to sell advertising to the stores in the area, he constantly observed huge commercial airliners taking off and landing every few minutes. He got used to hearing the deafening roar of airline engines day in and day out. Slowly, he eventually started to lose his fear of flying.

He finally made a big decision to go on a vacation in Hawaii, which he had always dreamed of doing. The only problem was that he had no choice but to fly. Before he left he took out flight insurance just in case the plane crashed. He wanted to be sure he would leave something for his mom and dad if he didnt come back.

Before boarding aircraft he took one sleeping pill and hoped it would keep him calm. He intentionally booked a window seat so he was able to see where he was going and what the earth and ocean looked like from the air.

When the flight attendant told the passengers to fasten their seat belts, he cinched his belt up so tight he said he thought he would break it. All through the flight he removed his seat belt only to go to the washroom. During the flight to Hawaii the only thing that really bothered him was that his ears got plugged up and hurt because of the changes in cabin pressure on the takeoff and landing. A fellow passenger suggested that he should chew some gum and that seemed to do the trick.

When he eventually landed in Hawaii he was so proud of himself! After all those wasted years of being hung up on that debilitating phobia, he finally had broken free. All it took was working near a large airport and watching as well as hearing the constant takeoffs and landings of these huge commercial airliners to reprogram his mind.

If you do have a fear of flying you must try and rid yourself of this debilitating, irrational fear. Your life will be changed forever when you allow yourself to soar with the eagles and fly anywhere in this wonderful world that your heart desires.

Numerous medical experts have found that passengers on commercial flights usually experience a worse bout of jet lag when flying to their holiday destinations from east to west. Usually, the more time zones their air flights cross when they travel from east to west, the more severe the symptoms of jet lag will be. But, airline passengers will only experience a milder bout of jet lag when their air flight is going from west to east.

Commercial airline passengers can fly north and south, or south to north, for thousands and thousands of miles without experiencing any jet lag. However, as soon as the pilot of the airplane starts flying in an east to west direction and crosses more than one time zone, they can experience jet lag.

Airline passengers will not usually experience the symptoms of jet lag until they exit the plane at their vacation destination. That is the time when the passengers’ biological clocks will start to make internal adjustments inside their bodies to coincide more closely with the local time at their destination. If they travel across one, or even two time zones, their bodies can usually adjust very quickly. However, if an airline passenger is in poor health or not feeling well before the flight, jet lag can compound the problem. In general, you should allow one day to recover for every time zone your air flight crosses.

The following information may lessen the effects of jet lag when you fly.

If you can, try to catch a flight that arrives at your vacation destination in daylight hours. When you land, immediately fit in with the new time zone and do not go to bed. If you’re feeling tired and want to take a little snooze, do it in a well lighted place.

In the evening, sleep in a darkened room as the darkness will help prepare your brain for sleep.

If you can, avoid looking at television or computer screens as they are bright and have high frequencies that can easily over-stimulate your brain.

Until your jet lag symptoms subside, do not consume alcohol or any drinks such as coffee and soda that contain caffeine, as it can disrupt your sleep.

It maybe helpful to take a melatonin tablet or capsule (as many air travelers do) in the early evening (your time) to help you adjust to the time zone at your destination. You still may have to take a melatonin pill for the next three or four evenings in a row before going to bed in this new location to help you readjust your biological clock. If you have never taken melatonin before, you should consult with your doctor or local pharmacist for more information in regards to the suggested dosage.
