Some ancient and marvelous buildings that have been built by our forefathers have stood the test of time. They are architectural marvels which cannot be replicated even today. Last year, the world participated in the unofficial vote for the new seven wonders of the world. Even if you didn’t pick them, there are many great historic wonders. Each of these sites are world famous, iconic, historic, and breathtaking. Here are some of the best.
Chichn Itz, Mexico- This is one of the most famous Mayan ruins in the world. This giant pyramid attracts thousands of tourist per year. It is a classical representation of Mayan architecture and the ruins around it tell us a lot about Mayan culture. This was the last temple ever to be built by the Mayan civilization.
Christ the Redeemer- In July 2007, Christ the Redeemer was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. This huge stature is of Jesus Christ with his arms spread wide open. It’s located on top of a hill and can be seen from everywhere in the city. The statue has his arms wide open to represent the welcoming nature of the people from Brazil.
Stonehenge, England- This historic site dates back over 4 thousand years. It was created by the ancient culture that lived here as a way to celebrate the changing of the seasons. The stones were moved in from Ireland which gives you an idea how massive and impressive this undertaking was. This is one of the oldest and ancient historic sites in the world.
Petra, Jordan- Petra was the glittering capital of the Nabataean empire. Masters of water technology in the desert region, the Nabataeans provided their city with great tunnel constructions and water chambers. A theater, modeled on Greek-Roman prototypes, had space for an audience of 4,000. Today, the Palace Tombs of Petra, with the 42-meter-high Hellenistic temple facade on the El-Deir Monastery are silent example of unbelievable and unparalleled architecture.
Located around the world, these seven wonders provide us with a clue into the diverse cultures and development of societies around the world. All of these are architectural marvels that took a lot of thinking and creativity to create. They are truly wonders of the world.
