Where To Go In Aberdeen, Scotland
July 4th, 2009 by stevinium, under Airport Hotels, Vacations. No Comments
Aberdeen is Scotland’s third largest city, in relation to the size of the city’s population. Since the mid eighteenth century Aberdeen’s buildings have been built using local grey granite and the city is well known for its sandy coastline. This has led to the city being nicknamed the Silver City and also the Granite City. However in recent years the city has added the nicknames of the Oil Capital of Europe or the Energy Capital of Europe due to the discovery of oil in the North Sea. The city has benefitted greatly from the oil industry and the support industries. Today the city is thoroughly modern and immensely vibrant with a lively nighlife.
Aberdeen hotels are often booked by people visiting on business but also by various other types of tourists keen to enjoy the many visitor attractions Aberdeen has to offer. Below you will discover details of three; Satrosphere Science Centre, Duthie Park Winter Gardens and Aberdeen Maritime Museum:
Aberdeen Maritime Museum
Aberdeen’s Maritime Museum is situated nearby the harbor, at the historic Shiprow. There are stunning views across the harbour from the museum. The Maritime Museum inhabits a small number of buildings, which include a former church and one of the oldest dwellings in Aberdeen. The museum has exhibits that include everything relating to the seagoing environment, from fishing boats to the oil industry. In essence, the museum tells theĀ story of Aberdeen’s epic relationship with the sea. Some of the collections contain photographs, paintings, models and ship plans from the most important of Aberdeen’s shipbuilders.
Duthie Park Winter Gardens
Lady Elizabeth Duthie of Ruthrieston,in 1881, gifted to the council, 44 acres of land. The land for the park was purchased, as a lasting memorial to her uncle and brother. In 1899, when the gardens were completed, they opened up to the public. However, in 1969 disaster struck and the greenhouses had to be demolished and reconstructed. This was due to horrendous storm damgage. Today, the David Welch Winter Gardens at Duthie Park are one of Scotland’s favourite garden attractions, and also the largest indoor gardens in the whole of Europe. Each greenhouse has an important collection such as, the Japanese Garden, Temperate House, Victorian House, Tropical House, Fern House and Corridor of Perfumes.
Satrosphere Science Centre
In Aberdeen, the Satrosphere Science Center was one of the first science and discovery centers in Scotland. This interactive, hands-on science center, has more than fifty exhibits and live science shows, and opened to the public in 1988. Although the center is aimed at primary age children, the attraction of the exhibits is universal. The center is found in the old tram sheds, near to the sea front, on Constitution Street. The purpose is to inspire children to become scientist’s, as entry into science courses in universities, is in decline. One of the favorite exhibits at the center is the famous giant soap bubble, where each child can be encompassed in a magic bubble.
There are many more visitor attractions in and about Aberdeen which are well worth visiting and the three above were chosen randomly. If you are planning to spend some time in Aberdeen, Scotland then you will find numerous quality hotels in Aberdeen, or many other forms of accommodation, available to book online.
Cruise Vacations and What You Need To Know
July 4th, 2009 by Tricia Valenstine, under Vacations. No Comments
There are many people that want to take a great vacation, something that they will remember for the rest of their lives, something great. If you want a vacation like this then you may want to consider taking a cruise on board of a cruise ship.
Cruise ships come in many sizes, and you may be wondering what there is to do when you are aboard a cruise ship. There are many activities that are common on the big ships that hold 1500 or more people; I am going to be covering these common amenities that can be found in many major cruise lines that are out there.
Offshore excursions that are guided are very popular among many of the popular cruise lines that are out there. The destination is up to you, some packages may stop at 5 or 6 foreign ports, while others maybe only one or two, if there is a port there then there is a cruise ship that will go to it, a simple internet search should be able to answer that question.
As for activities that you can do while you are waiting for you destination, you could catch a tan on the sun deck next to the swimming pool. If you need to cool off just hop in, if you need your muscles relaxed you could hop in the spa or get a massage.
If you are someone that likes to stay in shape, then you can stop by the gym, which every major cruise ship will have one or more. Besides having a gym on board, many cruises have a track that will circle the entire cruise ship for those that want to go for a jog or a just a walk.
A big one that can be found on all major cruise lines except for Disney and a couple of others are casinos. Gambling is illegal in almost all of the United States, but once the cruise ship gets a certain distance out in the ocean, the casino will open, usually stay open 24 hours for those that want to test their luck.
You will be able to spoil yourself with delicious foods, as major cruise lines only hire some of the best chefs around. There is plenty of dining and some cruises may even offer you room service straight to your cabin, so you can wake up with fresh coffee and eggs.
If you are a night owl then you can enjoy clubs aboard a cruise ship, where you can find dancing and cocktails, if you are old enough of course. Every cruise ship will have some sort of activity, parade or show for the night people.
Planning a perfect cruise is not that difficult if you know exactly what you want out of it. The easiest way would be to get a travel agent, if you cannot afford one then make a list of everything that you expect, and a staff member from the specific cruise line will make sure that they can meet your needs.

How to Choose the Right Camping Lantern
July 4th, 2009 by E.J. Montano, under Travel and Leisure. No Comments
Choosing the right camping lantern is important if you want to make your camping experience worth remembering. In buying a camping lantern, you have to choose from hundreds of designs and varieties for lanterns. Now, how will you get the right choice of camping lantern that would suffice your camping needs? You can do the choosing better if you are informed of the outdoor lanterns’ different types available.
Camping lights come in four types: the battery-operated, gas-fueled, liquid-fueled, and the candle. All these four types of camping lights have different advantages and disadvantages that must be considered when deciding what to buy. Although all are useful in some ways, not all can provide exactly what you need in your camping activity. In order for you to get the best choice, read the speculations for each type and select the one that you think is perfect for your needs.
The lanterns operated by batteries are useful in camping. Such type of camp lights is handy and easy to use. There is no disturbing sound from the lantern when you use it. Also, you do not have to worry of fire risk since there is no open flame. The batteries can be rechargeable or disposable and you can easily afford it because batteries are not expensive. You will only have to provide extra batteries for the lantern to give you brighter lights.
Gas camping lanterns use gas for power. There are different gases that you can use, but butane and propane are the most popular choices. The gas fuel comes in a canister. These lanterns are convenient to use and produce a very bright and stable light source. However, gas is often quite expensive, especially if you will be needing a lot of it and then these camping lights operate they can be noisy. An additional concern is that weather can affect the gas pressure, so in colder weather the gas may not work or it will be used at a faster rate. The canisters, usually weighing about 2 pounds each, can be heavy if you need to carry a few of them. Lastly, gas camping lanterns get very hot to the touch and do have an open flame, so care must be taken during operation to prevent accidents.
The liquid-fueled lanterns for camping require the use of liquid such as fuel, kerosene, or unleaded gas to make the lantern useful. These fuels may not be expensive and you can usually buy them at the gas stations. It can give a bright light that is enough to lighten the area, plus the lantern produces heat as well to warm the place. The only things to consider are the open flame, the hot surface, and the noise.
The fourth type of lanterns is the candle camping lantern. This requires the use of candle to directly lighten the camping area. The lantern serves as the candle holder and there is no need for more complex design or structure to use it. The candle can be lit anytime and it can be acquired at affordable costs than other lanterns. Some candles are also made of citronella which serves as insect repellants and it has no disturbing sounds. What you need to guard when using candles is its open flame which may harm you or put your life to risk. You cannot also use it when it is windy as it may turn down the flame.
Using camping lanterns does not mean using only one type of lanterns. You are free to use two or more types in order to get enough light and brightness for your camping area. If you want to save on expenses, you can use gas-fueled lantern and candles at the same time.
Now that you know more about each type of lantern option you can now try to find the one that best suits your needs. Consider the advantages and disadvantages of each type as that will help you. You should also take into consideration where you will be camping, the weather conditions during your trip and your budget. In the end, you should be able to choose the best camping lantern to add to your camping gear.
The Great City Of London And It’s Attractions
July 3rd, 2009 by Olive Jillian Carter, under Travel and Leisure. No Comments
London is home to a huge number of fantastic tourist attractions and it can be difficult to know where to begin once you arrive. The sights are almost never-ending and to make sure you leave having seen everything London has to offer, there is a great deal of sight seeing to be getting on with!
One of the first spectacles that springs to mind, and one of the more modern ones, is the London Eye. The vast ferris wheel of vision opened to the public in 1999 and despite a number sceptics that didn’t think it would catch on when it opened, it has gone on to become one of the world’s most popular tourist attractions.
St. Paul’s Cathedral is another main attraction of London. Redesigned and rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren in 1668, it is a fantastic example of the architecture of the renaissance period. To this day St. Paul’s Cathedral is recognised as Britain’s most iconic building.
Another historically fascinating spectacle of London is the Tower of London. It has served as a fortress, a prison and a death chamber for the people of London throughout history. It’s original purpose was to keep control over the raucus citizens of London in the 11th century under the rule of William the Conqueror.
Tate Modern (of course another main attraction) was converted from Battersea power station, and is the cities capital for believers of modern art along with the sceptical and the curious to view works of art from such celebrated modernists as Dali, Picasso, Matisse and of course Andy Warhol.
Arguable one of the most famous London attractions is Buckingham Palace. It is one of the most instantly recognisable buildings in the world, and is the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. An architectural and visual delight that is full of stunning works of art, although not a museum or art gallery it is open to the public for guided tours.
The last London spectacle that I shall mention here, but by no standards the last worth visiting, is the Natural History Museum. It was designed by Alfred Waterhouse and built in 1881 using Victorian building techniques and was originally made to house the growing amount of natural history exhibits in the British Museum and subsequently grew into the vast spectacle of a museum that it is today.
There are far too many great attractions in London to list here, but it will definitely take more than one day to see them all, and it is most definitely worth seeing them all. Therefore you will want a great hotel to stay at while you take in all the Great British culture, which there are also many of, its simply a matter of choosing the one that is right for you.
